We’re excited to introduce our newest board member, Haley Breniser, who brings a wealth of passion and experience to Paddle Antrim. Get to know a little more about Haley through this Q&A:

Q: Can you tell us a little about yourself?

A: Let’s see, I’ve lived in Kewadin since 2013 with my husband. We came here from the state of Washington. I am born and raised in Oakland County, Michigan. I have a 7-year-old son whom I adore and who attends Woodland School. My husband, Adam Brown, runs the Incubator Farm at the Grand Traverse Conservation District. Together we farmed our 13 acres in Kewadin for nearly 10 years—Undertone Farm. I am a lifelong learner, constantly curious, deeply feeling, and at my best when surrounded by wilderness. I love to read. I love to connect with my friends and family, I love to explore the woods and waters of northern MI. And of course, I love being a mother.

Q: What inspired you to get involved with Paddle Antrim?

A: Watching Deana and the Board of Directors build an organization that enables people of various abilities to enjoy our very important watershed, learn about its ecology, and gain more respect for its resilience. It’s an inspiring and impactful effort.

Q: Do you have a favorite memory or experience related to paddling or spending time on and around the Chain of Lakes Water Trail?

A: Setting trail cameras along tributaries in the Grass River Natural Area and catching hilarious footage of animals playing, sleeping, popping out of the ice, nurturing young… so good! Nature is always full of surprises.

Q: What excites you most about serving on the Paddle Antrim Board of Directors?

A: Engaging with my community, making new friends, and hopefully making a positive impact. It’s wonderful to be a part of such an inspiring group and to contribute in meaningful ways.

Q: In your opinion, what makes Paddle Antrim and the Chain of Lakes Water Trail special?

A:

The Chain: The amount of area it covers and the simple fact that it provides approximately 60% of the surface water input to Grand Traverse Bay. It’s vital to the region.

Paddle Antrim: The culture Paddle Antrim has built over the years is admirable, and the number of people they’ve exposed to the joys of paddling and the importance of watershed conservation is invaluable. It’s all about creating a stronger, more connected community while preserving what makes our region so special.

Q: What is a fun fact about you that most people might not know?

A: As an avian wildlife associate, I flew Harris Hawks and helped develop an educational raptor flight program while working at the High Desert Museum in Bend, OR. It was an incredible experience!

We’re thrilled to have Haley join our team and look forward to the unique perspective and passion she will bring to the Paddle Antrim Board of Directors!
