We’re thrilled to share some exciting news from Paddle Antrim! Our Executive Director, Deana Jerdee, has been appointed by Gretchen Whitmer to serve on the State Waterways Commission.

Deana will serve as a member of the general public for a term beginning September 19, 2026, and ending September 18, 2029, succeeding Craig Lehrke. This appointment is subject to the advice and consent of the Michigan Senate.

The State Waterways Commission is a seven-member advisory board that works with the Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR) to manage boating access, public harbors, certain locks and dams, and dedicated funds provided by boaters. Their work ensures Michigan’s waterways remain safe, accessible, and well-maintained for everyone who loves to explore them.

As Paddle Antrim’s Executive Director, Deana has been a tireless advocate for non-motorized access, stewardship, and safety on Michigan’s waterways. She played a key role in creating the Chain of Lakes Water Trail, Northern Michigan’s only state-designated Pure Michigan Water Trail. Through her leadership, Paddle Antrim has worked with local governments to secure over $1.3 million to develop critical water trail access sites and maintain the trail. In recognition of her efforts, Deana received the 2021 Verlen Kruger Award, honoring individuals who foster stewardship of Michigan’s water resources through paddle sports.

“I am deeply honored to be appointed to the State Waterways Commission,” said Deana. “Michigan’s waterways are central to our economy, our environment, and our quality of life. I look forward to bringing the perspective of water trail communities and non-motorized users to the Commission, while working collaboratively to ensure our harbors and access sites remain safe, welcoming, and sustainable for generations to come.”

Also reappointed to the Commission is Steve Remias of Shelby Township, who will continue serving as a representative of the marine trades industry. Steve is a longtime leader in Michigan’s boating community and a member of the Michigan Boating Industry Association Hall of Fame for his work on the Clean Marinas program.

Deana holds a Bachelor of Science in biology and environmental science from Carroll University and brings decades of experience in environmental leadership, nonprofit management, and water trail development to the Commission.

“Deana’s appointment is a tremendous honor and a testament to her expertise and passion for Michigan’s waterways,” said Paddle Antrim Board President, Mindy Theis. “Her voice will bring the perspective of non-motorized water trail users while continuing to champion responsible stewardship and access for all.”

Please join us in congratulating Deana on this exciting new role! We’re proud to see her expertise and dedication recognized at the state level, and we look forward to her continued leadership to protect and enhance Michigan’s treasured waterways.
