For many people, their first experience with Paddle Antrim—whether at a festival, class, or community event—sparks more than just a day of fun on the water. It often begins a journey of connection, curiosity, and commitment. For George Grazul, it started in 2017 when he took a safety class after moving to Traverse City and looking for a way to meet other paddlers. “Paddle Antrim wasn’t exactly what I was looking for, but it turned out to be much better,” he recalls. That initial experience led George to volunteer in countless ways: installing water trail signs, serving as a safety paddler, representing Paddle Antrim at community events, and supporting special projects. Over the years, his dedication has helped make our programs stronger, safer, and more accessible for everyone.
For Lisa and Gary Buczkowski, a husband-and-wife duo who retired to Northern Michigan after years of traveling back and forth from Chicago, their first Paddle Antrim Festival in 2016 was the spark. “It was the kayaking, actually the festival, that caught our attention. It drew us to explore more about the organization and the people involved,” says Lisa. Since then, they’ve become active volunteers, donors, and event participants. In 2022, they began safety paddler training and are now working toward becoming certified instructors—joining a growing group of paddlers who help teach, assist, and support others on the water.
What all of these volunteers share is a love of paddling that grows into something bigger: a commitment to community and stewardship of our waterways. Through their efforts, Paddle Antrim can expand classes, events, and programs, helping hundreds of adults and youth gain confidence, learn safety skills, and form a connection to the water that inspires protection and care.
Volunteers like George, Lisa, and Gary aren’t just helping run events—they are the paddle that powers our mission. Every access site monitored, every class supported, and every festival supported by these dedicated individuals ensures that the Chain of Lakes Water Trail remains a safe, welcoming, and joyful place for all.
