Michigan’s Outdoor Recreation: A Thriving Economic Force Revealed

The U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA) has recently shed light on the immense economic impact of outdoor recreation in Michigan. As champions of connecting people to nature, we at Paddle Antrim are thrilled by these statistics that underscore the strength of the outdoor industry within our state.

In the year 2022 alone, Michigan’s economy received a staggering $12.4 billion boost from outdoor recreation. Notably, this contributed to the creation of 119,000 jobs, marking a substantial increase of 10,000 from the previous year. Impressively, outdoor recreation constitutes 2.2% of Michigan’s overall economic makeup, signifying its sizable impact.

However, the significance extends beyond Michigan. At a national level, the BEA’s report unveiled the sheer scale of the outdoor recreation industry, boasting a massive $1.1 trillion in U.S. gross economic output. This figure surpasses the economic impact of mining, utilities, farming and ranching, and chemical products manufacturing, highlighting the importance of the outdoor sector on a broader scale.

This data highlights the profound economic and societal impact that outdoor activities hold for Michiganders. Embracing the outdoors not only promotes physical and mental well-being but also fosters connections with loved ones, instills a drive for stewardship, and cultivates a loyal community of advocates.

With outdoor participation on a continual upswing, the necessity to invest in and advocate for statewide policies supporting outdoor access, expanding trail networks, and preserving open spaces becomes ever more crucial. These initiatives are pivotal in ensuring that everyone can relish, explore, and benefit from Michigan’s unparalleled outdoor resources. We at Paddle Antrim are thrilled to be on the forefront of this work and will continue to push our mission forward, all of which is only possible because of our amazing donors and volunteers.
